Things never go as planned and that’s why I love not knowing where I’m going. Having an itinerary is boring to me. Knowing my next destination is like following a trail; you prevent experiences happening to you. When you have no plans, you are in control of your next step.
Our stay at Martam Village Resort was not at all planned. I had not heard of this property and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to stay here with my partner and experience this haven surrounded by nature sounds and valleys.
Not far away from the concrete jungle Gangtok – capital of Sikkim – is nestled Martam Village Resort; a family owned business that has been with the family for generations. Built in the early 1900’s; today at its heart is the preservation and promotion of Sikkimese heritage and culture; the promotion of local cuisine and the villagers way of life. They do this by ensuring opportunities and providing employment for the local residents.
Situated in the peaceful, and well preserved countryside of East Sikkim in the foothills of the Himalayas, Martam Village Resort lies by the lush Fambongla Wildlife Sanctuary and faces the majestic Nathula mountain range. The resort is perfect for nature lovers, adventurers and those seeking peace and relaxation.
Whilst staying at Martam Village Resort, you’ll be able to enjoy the ameneties at their neighbouring establishment; Martam Retreat. A swim in the pool? Some relaxing time at the spa? Organic traditional cuisine? Martam Retreat has it all. (more about that resort soon in another blog post)
The cottages
The cottages are built in a traditional ethnic style. They are made of stone, wood and bamboo. The beautiful wooden floors are polished and traditional hand-woven rugs are delicately placed giving it a warm and cosy feeling. Every cottage is graced with a large picture window, framing the spectacular countryside. I love waking up every morning to the sounds of the birds, as cliché as that may sound; it really is like that.
The food
Martam Village Resort take the time to source out top quality, local ingredients.
They specialize in traditional Sikkimese cuisine made from locally farmed, seasonal organic produce as well as foraged offerings of the nearby forests.
Did you know Sikkim is first organic state in the world and all farmlands in the state are certified organic? The policy of organic farming has phased out chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and achieved total ban on sale and use of chemical pesticides in the state! Amazing!
The surroundings
I am going to conclude this blog post with a few last pictures of our stay at Martam Village Resort. I hope you enjoyed reading and if you are into rural settings, you will love it just as much as we did.
